Skopje Hosts Regional Meeting on EU Integration, With the Western Balkans, Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia
Sali: enlargement is a strategic investment in European security and prosperity.
Skopje hosted an interregional meeting today of chief negotiators and senior officials responsible for EU integration, organised by the Ministry of European Affairs. The meeting was hosted by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of European Affairs Bekim Sali.
The gathering brought together representatives from the Western Balkans, along with Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia, together with representatives of the European Commission and international partners. The focus was on the future of EU enlargement, the next Multiannual Financial Framework, and speeding up alignment with EU legislation through more effective cooperation between governments and parliaments.
"Enlargement is a strategic investment in Europe's security, stability and prosperity," Sali said at the opening. He said North Macedonia and other candidate countries must accelerate reforms through coordinated work between governments, parliaments and political actors.
Particular attention, according to a statement from the minister's cabinet, is being paid to "gradual integration" — letting citizens and businesses feel the benefits of moving closer to the EU even before full membership. In that context, the next Multiannual Financial Framework is seen as a significant opportunity to support reforms and strengthen institutions.
Sali thanked all participants and partners, with particular thanks to the German Embassy and GIZ for their support in organising the meeting.
