Belica Fire Brought Under Control After a Days-Long Fight; New Blaze Near Borino
After more than 60 people fought the Belica fire, the crisis centre reported no active fires nationwide by late evening.
The fire near the village of Belica, in the Makedonski Brod municipality, which had burned for days at the Kajorec site toward Breznica, was brought under control overnight, the Crisis Management Centre said. More than 60 people took part in Saturday's operation, working simultaneously from the Skopje and Makedonski Brod sides, including teams from the public enterprise "Jasen" and Protection and Rescue Directorate crews equipped with Pinzgauer off-road vehicles.
Meanwhile, by 6 p.m. yesterday, a total of 14 open-air fires had been registered nationwide. Twelve were fully extinguished, while one, near the village of Borino in the Krushevo municipality, where low vegetation was burning, remained active.
The previous night, between 13 and 14 September up to 7:30 a.m., 11 open-air fires were logged, ten of them successfully put out — among them in Radusha (Saraj), Konsko (Gevgelija), Tateshi and Veleshta (Struga), Dolno Srpci–Beranci (Mogila) and Bolno (Resen, where rubbish was burning).
As the day went on, the Borino fire was also brought under control, and by late evening the crisis centre reported no active fires remained anywhere in the country. September, usually calmer for fires than summer, has still kept emergency services on constant standby this year.
