Fuel VAT Drops to 10 Percent From Tuesday to 28 September. The Government Wants to Blunt the Price Rise

The government is cutting fuel VAT from 18 to 10 percent for a two-week window.

The government decided at its 13 September session to cut value-added tax on diesel fuel from 18 to 10 percent. The reduced rate applies from 00:01 on 15 September to 24:00 on 28 September 2026.

Finance Minister Gordana Dimitrieska-Kochoska said the measure responds to current risks and movements on international markets, and should directly affect retail fuel prices while limiting how much of the higher costs pass through to other goods and services.

Government calculations show diesel would otherwise have risen by about 5 denars a litre. With the lower VAT, the price is expected to fall by about 2 denars instead — a combined swing of 7 denars — putting diesel at roughly 99 denars a litre.

The cut does not apply to petrol. Eurosuper BS-95 is expected to rise by about 3.5 denars to roughly 100.5 denars a litre, and BS-98 to about 102.5 denars.

The decision comes as US WTI crude climbed above $100 a barrel, its highest in four months. The government points to possible disruptions in fuel supply as the reason for the temporary step.

The cut is time-limited. After 28 September the rate reverts automatically to 18 percent unless the government issues a new decision to extend it.
